What is hypogonadism?

Hypogonadism is a condition in which the body produces abnormally low levels of testosterone, occurring as either a testicular problem (primary) or a pituitary/hypothalamic problem (secondary).

Hypogonadism occurs when the body consistently produces testosterone below the normal range. The condition splits into two main categories based on where the problem originates. Primary hypogonadism, also called testicular failure, means the testicles themselves are not producing adequate testosterone despite normal signaling from the pituitary gland. Secondary hypogonadism, or central hypogonadism, stems from insufficient signals sent by the pituitary gland or hypothalamus to stimulate testosterone production.

Men with hypogonadism often report fatigue, reduced muscle mass, mood changes, or decreased sexual function. The condition can develop at any age, though it becomes more common in older men. Diagnosis involves blood tests measuring testosterone levels, typically taken in the morning when levels are highest. Because testosterone plays a role in bone density, cardiovascular health, and metabolic function, identifying hypogonadism matters beyond sexual symptoms alone.

Treatment options vary depending on the type and underlying cause. Some men benefit from lifestyle changes, while others require medical intervention. Those seeking diagnosis and treatment options can consult TRT providers in Florida who can evaluate individual cases and recommend appropriate management strategies.
